Dear Members:

As the holiday season fades into just another memory and we begin the New Year, let us not reflect too long on what was or should have been but rather look with anticipation on what could be. DMA has always been a good example of this principle. With its 127 year history DMA has never rested on its laurels but continually looks to improve, create new chapters, establish and expand educational venues, explore new ventures and always look to improve those things we have set in place.

2011 is set to be a very exciting year for DMA. It has been reported that many of the Chapters have had very successful Fall Workshops, Meetings, Scholarship Auditions and Competitions and that many of our members and their students are already making plans to attend the 127th National Convention. This year’s Convention will be held July 3rd through July 9th at the beautiful Gaylord Palms Resort and Convention Center, in the Greater Orlando Area of Florida. Our Convention Schedule is packed with educational venues (5 Levels more than 115 hours), performance (PAC – Preliminary – Finals – Grand National Championship – Champion of Champions & Solo Titles all with Cash Scholarship Awards) and scholarship opportunities (Cash Scholarship Awards – Joffrey Scholarships – Cecchetti Scholarships), and social activities (President’s Reception – Gala Welcome Party – Annual Awards Banquet).

This year we have revamped the Ballet Intensive Program and added a Jazz Intensive Program to the three day immediately prior to the start of the National Convention – June 30 through July2nd. As you know the Ballet and Jazz Intensives are additional scholarship opportunities for the students who attend. We are excited to announce that a Cecchetti Scholarship will be awarded this year in addition to the Joffrey Scholarships and the DMA Scholarships this summer.

Our Teachers Training School and Student Honors Intensive Program (SHIP) continue to improve and grow. Both of these programs are held at the State University of New York, at Buffalo, Center for the Arts which is a marvelous and professional facility. If you as a teacher have never had the opportunity to attend the TTS program and your students have never participated in SHIP, you have missed two of DMA’s prized accomplishments.

For those of you who have not purchased the new DMA – Modern DVD we suggest that you order one as soon as possible. This wonderful DVD was a labor of love by our First Vice-President Shely Pack-Manning and her husband Jim who worked diligently on this supplement to our Modern Manual. We thank them for their untiring efforts.

With all of these wonderful programs and scholarship – DMA stands alone in the forefront of dance education and generosity. DMA offers more than $200,000.00 is scholarships annually without outside support. It is my privilege to announce that DMA has obtained a 501c3 status with the Internal Revenue Service which now makes it possible to expand our Scholarship Programs and at the same time make us eligible to offer tax benefits to those of you who contribute to these Scholarship Programs. I want to thank Robert Mann and Charleen Locascio for their tireless efforts to make this possible.

I am elated to announce that this year’s DMA Annual Award will be presented to David Parsons and our President’s Award will be presented to Joe Tremaine. The Gaylord Resort DMA discounted room rate is $154.08. Please see the discounted DMA rates to visit “Mickey” at Walt Disney World and “Harry Potter” at Universal Studios in this publication.

So if you are not one of the members who has already made plans to attend the National Convention or one of the other DMA Summer Events, it is not too late, act now, make your plane and hotel reservations and keep in mind the deadline dates APRIL 15TH FOR ALL GAYLORD EVENTS AND MAY 1ST FOR TTS & SHIP.

See you all this summer!

Phyllis Guy
